DAYS AT ETZ HAYYIM...a Photographic Diary

Project manager: Vassiliki Yakoumaki
Photo's by Christos Varvantakis and text by Nicholas Stavroulakis

The eastern facade of the synagogue with the the main gate to the men's courtyard on the right. The Synagogue shared a common outer courtyard that connected it to Beth Shalom Synagogue and permitted it access to the community mikveh.

The memorial to the victims of our Community in 1944 during the 'action' that saw the destruction of our last Kehila. This is found in the Lauder Garden. The dedication reads:

'To the memory of the the Greek Jews of the city of Hania - the community of Etz Hayyim Synagogue who perished on the 9th June, 1944.' Hania is the only city in Greece that had a Jewish presence that has no public monument to their tragic end.

The interior looking out into the Ronald Lauder Garden. To the left is our huppah that doubles as a mehitza on occasion. The garden area prior the the Second World War was dominated by a square structure that had a first floor at the lower level of the arch. This was the main mehitza but alas has not been rebuilt. This area also provides access to the mikveh and the four rabbinical tombs.

The stairs leading to the mehitza in the north courtyard - with Minou one of the Synagogue cats.

Bronze plaque commemorating some of our donors.
