is done on handwoven cotton broadcloth with embroidery in traditional
Cretan stitch.

Ceramic
in turquoise glaze. This lamp can either be used with its chains
to hang or can be set on a support. It is based on traditional Sabbath
Lamps once common to Spain and Egypt and later, in bronze, they
appeared in Germany and Poland. The Etz Hayyim lamp conforms to
the type used in the12th cent.

Container for La Serena water

This
blue glazed container has a text that reads and Joseph is a
vine. This text was widely used to ward off the Evil Eye and
is often found on Jewish kameoth. The Serena Cup is a tradition
amongst many Sephardi Jews in the Balkans. On the night of the New
Moon the cup is filled with water and usually covered with a piece
of muslin (to keep away thirsty insects). This is set so that it
collects the rays of the New Moon. This water is used during the
coming month to ward off evil and illness bottled, it is
added to other drinks!

This calendar has 17 months (Sept. 2006 till Dec. 2007), and lists the hilidays for the Jewish, Islamic and Christian
faiths, as well as a complete glossary explaining each one's significance.
The calendar is Illustrated each month with pictures from around Hania, showing the
different influences over the centuries of the three major religions in Cretan architecture.
The Calendar costs €12,00 (or 15 USD), and all proceeds go to maintaining the synagogue. Please
remember to add shipping of €1,50 for Europe and Israel, and €2,00 for North America.
