 Traditional Sephardi-Jewish Festival Cookery

On Sunday, September 6 at 7 p.m. Etz Hayyim Synagogue will host an evening of Sephardi Festival food and recipes, music and a small exhibit of reproductions of Jewish art. The evening will be held at Etz Hayyim Synagogue, the only remaining Synagogue on the island of Crete in the Old Town of Hania.

Nikos Stavroulakis, Emeritus Director of the Athens Jewish Museum as well as Curatorial Advisor to the Jewish Museum in Salonika and now director of Etz Hayyim Synagogue will give a presentation on Sephardi holiday cooking, including specific recipes. Mr. Stavroulakis is among many other things the author of several cookery books and examples for the presentation will be taken from his “Cookbook of the Jews of Greece” (Athens: Lycabettus Press).

Visitors will have a chance to taste several dishes as a selection will be prepared by members of the community and supporters of the Synagogue. If you are interested in preparing food for the event, please contact us.

The evening will be accompanied by the playing of Shepardi music. In the courtyard of the Synagogue there will be a small exhibit of reproductions of Jewish art.

Entrance is free, donations for the Synagogue are appreciated.
