“Shadows Next to the Parasol” was an artistic cooperation, exchange and education project that addressed the extermination of the Jewish community of Crete during the Second World War.
Between June 2023 and December 2024, Etz Hayyim Synagogue worked with the Jewish Cultural Centre Ariowitsch-Haus (Leipzig, Germany) in the joint project “Shadows Next to the Parasol.” The project was part of the 2024 Memorial Year commemorating the 80th anniversary of the sinking of the Tanais ship during which the Cretan Jewish community perished on 9 June 1944, spelling the end 2,300 years of Jewish presence on Crete.
The project produced a performative installation at Etz Hayyim Synagogue in October 2024 and theatre-pedagogical material for schools. The project was financed by the German Federal Foreign Office with funds of the German-Greek Future Fund.
