The TCZ Toolkit: The Contact Zone in the Digital Realm
Digital spaces are now deeply embedded in the way cultural practitioners communicate, collaborate, build communities and invite participation. The TCZ Toolkit: The Contact Zone in the Digital Realm explores what happens when the principles of the Contact Zone enter these spaces, and what practitioners may need to consider when working online or across digital and physical environments.
The Toolkit grew from a task led by Etz Hayyim Synagogue within the TCZ project. The development process began with a two-day working meeting in Hania in April 2025, where project partners reflected together on their own digital practices and established the conceptual direction of the resource. Etz Hayyim subsequently coordinated a series of collaborative working sessions, developed draft texts from the group’s discussions and brought the material back to the consortium for review and further development.
Working with Contact Zone principles in digital spaces
The Toolkit is organised around six areas of practice: Digitalisation, Communication, Ethics, Intersectionality, Participation and Co-creation. Each is connected to a principle of the Contact Zone methodology and asks what that principle might mean when our encounters are mediated, supported or shaped by digital tools.
Across its chapters, the Toolkit considers questions such as accessibility and digital inequality, multivocal communication, consent and data, positionality, meaningful participation and shared authorship. Its concern is the human relationships that exist around technology: who is able to enter a space, whose voice becomes visible, how decisions are made and how practitioners can work with greater awareness and care.
The Toolkit follows these discussions with reflective questions and practical exercises that can be used individually, within a team or as part of a training process. Readers are invited to examine their own digital habits and projects, map the audiences they work with, review questions of visibility and consent, and consider how their existing practices could change.
A resource for your own practice
The Toolkit is intended to be worked with. You can read it from beginning to end, choose a chapter connected to a current question in your organisation, or use individual reflective exercises with colleagues and participants.
Like the wider TCZ methodology, it offers a framework for reflection and adaptation. The questions will look different depending on the people, technologies and environments involved, and we encourage practitioners to bring their own experiences into the process.
