Etz Hayyim relies on the dedication and generosity of its volunteers. Each year we welcome two long-term volunteers: one through the Austrian organization Gedenkdienst and one through Aktion Sühnezeichen Friedensdienste (ASF), who spend a full year supporting the synagogue’s operations. We also partner with Loyola Marymount University, which sends a student volunteer to conduct a summer internship at the synagogue. In addition, we are joined by volunteers who come independently—often inspired by a visit, research interest, or personal connection—and who choose to contribute their time and energy to our community.
As a nonprofit with only three paid staff members, volunteers are vital to everything we do: from maintaining the building and guiding visitors, to supporting services, events, and educational projects. Their commitment allows Etz Hayyim to continue as both a living synagogue and a place of prayer, recollection, and reconciliation.
